Commissions
Alex Fischer accepts commissions for original artwork across painting, sculpture, digital works, and site-specific installation. Each commission begins as a conversation about context, scale, and intent, and develops through the same iterative process that drives the studio practice — images and objects built, translated, and rebuilt until they arrive at a form that is structurally inevitable.
Commissioned work is not a departure from the practice. It is the practice applied to a specific context. The site, the architecture, the collection, the brief — these become material constraints that shape the work's internal logic, just as a canvas edge or a projection surface would.

What can be commissioned
Painting — Oil, acrylic, and mixed media on canvas or panel. Works range from intimate scale to large-format pieces exceeding three metres. Commissioned paintings follow the same layered process as studio works, with client input on palette direction, scale, and thematic territory.
Sculpture — Fabricated and assembled works in mixed media. Sculptures can be designed for specific architectural contexts, indoor or outdoor, and are engineered for permanence appropriate to their environment.
Digital and animation — High-resolution digital compositions, generative works, and animation loops for screens, projection, or LED. Digital commissions can be delivered as archival prints, as media files for display hardware, or as site-specific installations.
Site-specific installation — Multi-component works designed for a particular space. Installations may combine painting, sculpture, projection, and sound, and are developed in dialogue with the architecture and intended audience. Past site-specific projects have spanned gallery, commercial, public, and residential contexts across North America and Asia.
Process
Every commission follows a structured process designed to align creative vision with practical requirements.
1. Initial conversation — We discuss the context: the space, the purpose, the timeline, the budget range. This is an open exchange, not a formal brief. The goal is to understand what the work needs to do in its eventual home.
2. Proposal — Based on our conversation, a written proposal outlines the concept, dimensions, materials, timeline, and fee. For larger or site-specific projects, this may include reference images, precedent works, and preliminary sketches or digital mock-ups.
3. Development — Once the proposal is approved, work begins in the studio. Depending on the project, you may receive progress updates at key stages. The iterative process means the work evolves — I will communicate if it moves in an unexpected direction and discuss any implications for the original brief.
4. Completion and delivery — The finished work is photographed for documentation, carefully packed, and shipped or installed. Installation services are available for site-specific projects and large-scale works.
Pricing
Commission fees depend on scale, medium, complexity, and timeline. A general range:
Paintings — from $2,000 CAD for smaller works to $25,000+ for large-format pieces.
Sculptures — from $5,000 CAD, depending on materials and engineering.
Digital / animation — from $3,000 CAD, depending on resolution, duration, and delivery format.
Site-specific installations — quoted per project based on scope, materials, fabrication, and installation requirements.
A deposit (typically 50%) is required to begin work, with the balance due on completion. Detailed terms are outlined in the commission agreement provided with the proposal.
